When a domain expires, your website and mail service will stop functioning, and no changes can be made to the domain. However, for many TLDs (.co.nz, .com, etc.), you have a period after the actual expiration date during which you can still renew the domain and retain ownership. If you do not renew the domain during this “Grace Period” then the domain will be released back into the public pool of domains. The actual Grace Period timeframe differs depending on the TLD.
Some TLDs, like .nz domains, also have additional Grace Period after registration or renewal where you can cancel the domain within the timeframe and not be billed for the domain.
Grace Periods for New Zealand Domains
Registration Grace Period
This is the period after initial registration of a domain that it is possible to cancel the domain without being billed for it.
- The Registration Grace Period for .nz top-level domains is currently 5 days.
- If the domain is cancelled during this period of time it will be released back into the pool of domains that are available to register.
- If the domain is cancelled and re-registered during this period, it is not able to be cancelled for a second time within one month of the initial registration.
- It is not possible to transfer the domain to another domain registrar during this period.
Renewal Grace Period
This is the period after a domain has been renewed that it is possible to to cancel the domain without being billed for it.
- The Renewal Grace Period for .nz top-level domains is currently 5 days.
Redemption Grace Period
This is the period after a domain name has been cancelled or expired that it is possible for the domain name to be restored.
- The Redemption Grace Period for .nz top-level domains is currently 90 days.
- If the domain is not restored within this grace period, it will be released back into the pool of domains that are available to register.
New Zealand domains have a UDAI (Unique Domain Authentication Identifier) – a randomly generated 8 character string unique to each NZ domain. The main purpose of a UDAI is to authorise the transfer of a domain from one registrar to another. A UDAI is initially generated when a domain is registered, although a new UDAI can be requested at any time.
International domains often use an Auth Code or EPP Code, which is very similar to a UDAI.
All our New Zealand domains are managed by a third party domain registrar.
Recently our third party registry Openhost was taken over by Dreamcast.
There are options on some of the notifications such as a “My Account” tab that are not activated.
Please do not use “Express Renew” on any notices you receive.
Domain Payment
Payment for your domain is still made trough NZServers LTD detailed on the Payment tab below.
If you make a payment for a domain outside of our Stripe Payment Gateway please let us know by email.
