This winter was exceptionally cold in North Canterbury. Spring pops up now and then as we were still getting the occasional frost to the end of November.

I had the chance to visit the botanical gardens in Christchurch back in September, which is a beautiful place to visit.

Greylisting Emails

 

Greylisting was introduced as part of a CPANEL update some months ago.

Greylisting is a method used to reduce the volume of SPAM. In a perfect world this works well, sadly we are not in that world.
We quickly found out that not everyone who sends emails had the correct SPF records. Without a correct SPF record emails were delayed.

We realised Greylisting was not going to work on our server.

Greylisting was disabled from the server around the 14th of October 2015.

Server Downtime 

The server has had mainly 99% uptime. Linux is a great system but, it's not foolproof.
Most of you will not have realised that on the 11th of October was one of those moments when the Linux server had a meltdown for approx one hour after 180 days of uptime.

Excessive Email Polling

If you access our mail server more than 60 times in one hour, you will eventually be locked out of the server.
If you have IT staff who set-up your email A/C's, please make sure the frequency is no more than every 5 minutes.
If you use an Iphone/Ipad, make sure the Ipad/Iphone set the 'Fetch' frequency for 5 minutes or more.

Email Passwords

We are still encountering incidents where clients had loose passwords which allowed spammers access email A/C's to send large volumes of SPAM. Changing the password stopped the SPAM.

If you have an easy password then change this immediately using CPANEL or by using webmail.
